My son mad $12300 last year and paid $1071 in taxes. why would he only get back $472 instead of $1071? I thought students making that little got a full refund.

If his income was $6,300 or less he would have had no taxable income and would have received all of what he paid in back.

However, any income he had over that $6,300 is taxable.  So his taxable income would have been $6,000 or approximately a little less than half of what he made.  So, using the 2017 tax tables, his tax liability would be $603. which is why he is not getting everything he paid in back. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-dft/i1040tt--dft.pdf

There is no special tax advantage as a student and if the student can be claimed as a dependent he/she loses the $4050 personal exemption.
