Yes, it sounds like you would be able to claim your son as a dependent on your 2016 income tax return. I have included the two tests, (Qualified Child and Qualified Relative) that contain the criteria used to determine if a person qualifies to be claimed by a taxpayer. The time your son was in the Airforce is considered time spent at home with you. If your son does not meet the first test I am sure he will meet the second test.
