My son is serving a 2 year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We are paying for his mission. Can I claim him as a dependent?

It depends. You can, if his temporary absence on the mission falls into one of the 5 exceptions categories:

Illness
Education
Business
Vacation
Military service

Note: It must be reasonable to assume that the absent person will return to the home after the temporary absence.
