My son is able to file taxes this year yet he also can be claimed on my return (qualifications are met). Does it matter whose taxes I file first, mine or his?

No, it doesn't matter who files first.  Just make sure your son selects "I can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's  tax return."

Well if he fails to do that, then the order does matter, doesn't it?

No, if he fails to do that the order still will not matter.
