If your son was a full-time student last year, you may be able to claim him as a Dependent no matter how much income he earned.

If all of these qualifications are met, you can claim your Son as a Dependent:

  • He is a citizen of the US
  • He is related to you
  • He was under age 24 and a full-time student at least 5 months during 2018
  • He lived with you more than 1/2 the year (Living away at college counts as living with you)
  • He cannot be claimed as a Dependent by anyone else
  • He is not filing a joint return
  • You provided more than 1/2 of his support

If you meet all the qualifications to claim your Son as a Dependent, he can still file his own Tax Return, but he cannot claim himself.  As he walks through the TurboTax interview process he will need to answer "YES" to the question "Someone else can claim me as a Dependent" and "YES" to "and this person will claim me on their 2018 Tax Return" so that you can claim him on your Tax Return.
