My son earned approx 6k with door dash as a full time student. He paid zero federal or state tax. Turbo says he's getting $900 refunded. I don't believe it. any ideas?

Your son has to pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare.

MY DEPENDENT HAD A JOB

If your dependent has a W-2 for his after-school job, summer job, etc. you do not include the information on your own return. You can still claim your child as a dependent on your own return.  He/she can file his own return for a refund of some of his withheld wages (he won’t get back anything for Social Security or Medicare), but MUST indicate on it that he can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.  (Supervise this closely or prepare it for him!)

If your dependent’s earnings were over $400 and were reported on a 1099Misc or 1099NEC then he must file a return and pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare.

First of all is he your dependent?  How old is he?   He does owe self employment tax on it.  Did he fill out Schedule C for it?  If he is not your dependent he probably is getting the $1,400  3rd stimulus minus the tax on his income.

Maybe it's a 900 tax due?  If he is a full time student and your dependent make sure he checked the box saying he is a dependent and that he's not getting the 1,400 on line 30.

if he doesn't check the dependent box, you will  have trouble with your own tax return.

If you already filed, he won't be able to e-File without the checkmark.
