My social security card has previous name. Name changed to married name. Can I not file with my actual legal name?

If you have not yet changed your name with the Social Security administration (SSA) and received a new SS card, you must file your tax return using your former name because the IRS uses the Social Security database and would reject your e-filed return as they cannot match your SSN with your married name.

If you have changed your name with the Social Security Administration and have a new SS card in our new name, you must file your tax with your new name.

Please see this page on how to change your name with the SSA:
