My husband is in a lower tax bracket than me and going back to school while requesting financial aid. Will MFJ or MFS be the best option for us in Wisconsin?

MFS is an expensive status for Federal taxes, so you need to consider whether the financial aid benefit outweighs the additional taxes.  Also be aware that some or all of scholarships and grants can be taxable.

It won't make a big difference for requesting a financial aid for school, since he will need to report your financial information on the FAFSA even if you file taxes separately. Keep in mind, Wisconsin is community property state, which means  each spouse must report half of all combined community income and deductions in addition to his or her separate income and deductions.
