So sorry for your loss. Do not change the order of the names on your 2025 tax return.
For the year that your spouse died, you can still file a joint return. That way, you will get the married filing jointly standard deduction of $31,500 (+ $1600 for each spouse 65 or older) which will lower the amount of income you are taxed on.
In My Info, you will need to indicate that your spouse died. When his name is in My Info, there is a screen early in the interview that asks "Do any of these apply to [name] ?’” where you will do that, and then a drop down will appear where you can enter the date he passed.
If you have qualifying dependent children you will be able to file as a qualifying surviving spouse (QSS) for the next two years after this tax return. Post back if you need further help.
For next year, when you prepare a 2026 tax return, you will need to start a new account with its own email and a new user ID when you begin to file as Single.
Also, after this year's taxes are taken care of.... download the PDF copies of every prior year's tax files, and back them up on a USB flash drive (keep in a safe place/file drawer, or Bank Safe deposit box). TTX only keeps the last 7 years of files, and drops one year each succeeding year. You may need to reference some of those files in the future, and it's best to keep your own copies.
