My federal return is being rejected with error SA-F8936-046, even though my VIN number is correct

My federal return is rejected with the below errors: SA-F8936-046 - Schedule A (Form 8936), 'TIN' does not match 'VIN' shown in the e-File database. Please refer to your Time of Sale report and resubmit your return. SA-F8936-048 - The e-File database indicates this vehicle was not purchased during the tax period of the return. SA-F8936-047 - Schedule A (Form 8936) credit amount does not match the type of credit reported in e-File database.

The rejections happen due to the IRS business rules when either:

  • Your tax ID and VIN do not match in the IRS database (Rejection code F8936-046)
  • The credit type claimed and the amount entered on the Schedule A of Form 8936 is not matching the IRS database (Rejection code F8936-0047)

Please follow these steps:

  1. Check the report that you received from the dealer and make sure it is correct and matches what you have entered on your tax return.

Dealers who sell vehicles eligible for a used (previously owned) vehicle credit under IRC 25E must f...2. Contact the dealer and make sure that they provided the correct information to the IRS and/or that they did provide the sale information to the IRS.3. If number 1 and 2 are true and the IRS still rejects your tax return, you will have to print and mail the return, including substantiating documentation for the claim of the credit.

My federal return is being rejected with error SA-F8936-046, even though my VIN number is correct

I have the same issue as the other person who posted.  I have a letter from the IRS which matches the VIN on the car as well as the registration.  There are no 1's or l's or zeros or O's in my VIN and Turbotax is still rejecting it as an invalid VIN.  I don't want to have to print out my form and mail it in because your form isn't finding the VIN that I am absolutely sure is correct.  Is anything being done to correct this??  This seems to be an issue for MANY people, not just a few.

If you are getting a rejection that the VIN doesn't match with the IRS e-file system.

Please follow these steps:

  1. Check the report that you received from the dealer and make sure it is correct and matches what you have entered on your tax return.
  2. Contact the dealer and make sure that they provided the correct information to the IRS and/or that they did provide the sale information to the IRS.
