My ex pays for 18 yr olds tution. My son also qualified for grants. I claim him as dependent. Who uses 1098T credit? He worked last year and wants for me to not claim him?

My son did work half of last year. He also put my income down to qualify for grants. But now his dad is saying I didn't pay for his college so I shouldn't even claim him and let my son use the 1098T so he can get most money.

Whoever is eligible to claims the student (your son) as a dependent is the person that is entitled to claim the 1098-T and the education credits. So, if your son doesn't qualify as your dependent and he elects to file his own tax return and "claim" himself then he would claim the 1098-T and the education credits.  However, if you son states on his tax return that someone will claim him on his tax return then he would not be allowed to claim the 1098-T and educations credits.

When I put in the 1098T info in it gave me 2500 back. I didn't pay for his college so I feel this isn't my money but I do help him with all other expenses. I have always claimed him as dependent while my ex claims my 14 yr old, even though she lives with me and I have custody. He wanted to do it this way because he pays child support on her. I just want to make sure I'm doing it right and being fair. Can my son use this 1098T credit when he files for his taxes for the job he worked half of last year?
