My employer provided a 2021 W2-C. I generated at 1040X Turbo Tax. Column C shows the updated information and column A has the same info. Should column A tie to my 1040?

On my 1040X, column A original amount and column C correct amount are the same.

Which boxes did the W-2c change, and by how much? Some changes on a W-2 will not affect your tax return. For example, in most cases changes to boxes 3 through 6 will not change your tax return.

Thanks for the quick response. On the W2-C, box 1 changed, by a little over $100. The net impact is a tax liability of $35 which shows correctly in the 1040X. I'm just surprised the original 1040 data doesn't show. Columns A and C are the same in the 1040X but the incremental $35 tax liability does show in line 20.

"On the W2-C, box 1 changed, by a little over $100. "

Line 1 of 1040-X Col. C goes up by a little over $100.

Do not file an incorrect Form 1040-X.

In part III 1040-X you're supposed to explain each line. How are you going to explain line 20 if line 11 doesn't show $35 ?

are you in the 32% tax bracket?

I just printed out the Turbo Tax generated 1040-X form. I can't submit it as is, because as you noted, it does not reflect the changes from original to correct amounts in lines 1,3,5 for Income and lines 6,8,11 for tax. I'm wondering why the Turbo Tax generated 1040-X form is incorrect. I can use the corrected data from Turbo Tax to manually fill out the form and submit but I thought Turbo Tax should generate an accurate 1040-X. And yes, 32% tax bracket.

How did you do the amendment?  You may have entered the changes before you amended it.  I would delete the amended return and try again. After you delete the amended return make sure the return matches the original return you filed.  Are you using the Desktop program?  Do you still have a copy of the .tax2021 original file to try again?

In the Desktop program all you have to do is go to Forms mode and delete the 1040X.  Then take the changes out.

Thanks for the tips. I'll give that a try tomorrow. I appreciate the help.

This is a common problem reported here by TurboTax users who try to amend,

On the other hand.

There are other TurboTax users who report success with TurboTax 1040-X process.

It is a mystery.

The blank form in fillable PDF format and its instructions are available at www.irs.gov.
Refer to the Instructions for what is to be attached to Form 1040-X.

Do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because the Form 1040-X reflects any changes there and becomes your new tax return.

Mail to the address shown in the most recent version of Instructions.

IRS says;

E-filed and paper 1040-X are processed the same way.

your paper 1040-X should show in the IRS website after three weeks.

Thanks for the information. Glad to know I'm not going crazy. I'll try Turbo Tax again tomorrow and then manually file if needed. Thanks again.

I have found that once you try to undo an amendment, TurboTax gets confused and can't recover.

In this case, it's already confused.

How do I cancel or undo an amended return in TurboTax Online?

If you started amending your tax return by accident and would like to cancel the amendment:

  1. Open your return if it’s not already open.
  2. In the left menu select Cancel amend.
  3. Select Yes, I want to cancel my amended return.

How do I cancel or undo an amended return in the TurboTax CD/Download software?

If you started amending your federal return by accident and would like to cancel the amendment, follow this process to correctly "unamend" your federal return:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Switch to Forms Mode (Windows instructions | Mac instructions).
  3. In the left pane, select Form 1040X.
    • Windows: After the form is generated in the right pane, click the Delete Form button at the bottom of the window.
    • Mac: From the Forms menu, select Remove Form 1040X.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the 1040X from your return

  1. Important: Go back through the TurboTax interview and undo any changes you made after you selected the option to amend your  return, as merely deleting the 1040X will not undo those manual entries for you.

State Amendments

The best way to "unamend" your state return is to go through your state return from the beginning and keep your eyes peeled for amend-related screens or questions.

The amend question usually appears right at the beginning or towards the end of the state interview (never in the middle).

Correct any entries that have to do with an amended return, e.g.:

  • Answer No when asked if you want to amend;
  • Clear any amend-related checkboxes;
  • Delete entries in the tax year field.
  • Note: In a few state programs, you actually have to answer Yes to the amend question so you can revisit the screens that contain the information you want to delete.

If you still can't get rid of your state amendment form, try clearing your state return and starting over.
