My employer paid directly for business-related study materials and reported it in box 7 "non-employee compensation" on 1099-MISC. Isn't this a benefit, not compensation?

I believe this 1099 was sent in error, what should I do?

You should contact your employer for clarification.  If an error has been made, the employer will need to issue you a corrected tax document.  Don't file your return until you have received all of your tax documents in their proper and corrected form.
