My dividend income is handled on another person's return. IRS says I need to include a note on Schedule B to let them know. How do I do that in TurboTax?

The note on Schedule B is supposed to indicate the source of the income and the taxpayer ID of the person whose return includes the income.

You have nominee dividend income. There is not a place in your tax return to indicate who the nominee is.  All you need to do on your return is to indicate that the dividends do not belong to you.

Additionally, according to the 2018 Instructions for Schedule B, you should give the actual owner of the dividends a Form 1099-DIV and file the 1099-DIV plus Form 1096 with the IRS.

Please see the following on how to enter it:

  1. Enter the 1099-DIV exactly as you see it.
  2. After you click Continue when you have finished entering the information from your Form 1099-DIV, the next screen is titled “Tell us if any of these uncommon situation apply to you”
  3. The second choice on this screen is “I need to adjust these dividends”
  4. Check this box and click Continue
  5. Then you will see a screen titled “Tell us about your dividend adjustment”
  6. Enter the amount as a positive number and the reason for the adjustment.  This will make the proper entry on your Schedule B.
