Because she was a student until May, and is younger than 24, you can still claim her as a qualifying child.  You get the $500 credit for other dependents and you can claim education credit for 2024 on your return.   A dependent cannot claim a dependent, which means since your grandchild is living with you, you can also claim your grandchild as a dependent for the child tax credit and perhaps earned income credit, depending on amount and sources of your income.    By next year, if your daughter earns more, you will not be able to claim her as a dependent, nor will you be able to claim the grandchild, since your daughter will be able to claim her child as a dependent.

Your daughter can file her own 2024 tax return to seek a refund of tax withheld from her paychecks but must say on her own return that someone else can claim her as a dependent.

WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?

You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2024 tax return as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Qualifying relative

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).
  • They made less than $5050 in 2024.   (Not counting Social Security)
  • You provided more than half of their financial support.

When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them. There may be other tax benefits you can get when you claim a dependent.

It depends. If your daughter meets the dependency test, you may be able to claim her and her child as  dependents. Below you will find the basic qualifiers:

For a Qualifying child

  • They have to be related to you.
  • They can't be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They must be a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • If they are married, they can't file a joint return with their spouse.
  • They must be under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They must have lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Although your daughter graduated in May, she still may be considered a full-time student. Refer to the TurboTax Help article Am I considered a full-time student?

If you claim your daughter as your dependent and she files a tax return to get a refund of taxes taken out of her income, make sure that she shows on her tax return that she can be claimed on someone else’s tax return. Refer to the TurboTax article: How do I indicate that I can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return?
