The 1098-T is used to claim tax credits for the AOTC or LLC. You don't file it with your return but use it to fill out Form 8863 which is attached to your 1040. The info goes on the parent's return when claiming a dependent.

Qualified expenses for the AOTC/LLC are very picky, you can't claim room and board expenses. The 1098-T expenses do qualify.

The 1098-T Box 1 payments in my case did not always line up perfectly with the intended Academic calendar year. You can make a payment in Dec 2025 for 2026 tuition and have it be counted for tax year 2026 AOTC credits. Turbotax  allowed for this adjustment during the interview if Box 1 did not align with the intended calendar year.

If you claim your daughter as a dependent, you only can claim her education credits by entering her form 1098-T on your tax return.

It doesn't matter who paid your tuition.

The following is an extract of an IRS document:

Who can claim a dependent's education expenses.   If a student is claimed as a dependent on another person's tax return, all qualified education expenses of the student are treated as having been paid by that person. Therefore, only that person can claim an education credit for the student. If a student is not claimed as a dependent on another person's tax return, only the student can claim a credit.

To enter your form 1098-T in TurboTax Online, follow these steps:

  1. Open your tax return
  2. Click on Federal in the left panel then Deductions & Credits
  3. Navigate to the list of Deductions and Credits
  4. Select Start next to Education expenses and Scholarships
  5. Choose the Student from the list of family members. Or if the student has already been added, click on  Edit next to the name of the student.
  6. Continue the interview and after a few screens, answer Yes on the page Did you get a 1098-T for the year 2025?

I have 1098t for both my kids and am doing 2025 tax.

I can't find #4 in the current Turbo version. I have just updated, but still is not there. Am I doing something wrong.?

I'm using Turbotax Online but the Desktop version should be similar.

I'm showing  the screens that eventually lead to requesting you upload or enter the 1098-T
