That's no surprise. Rarely does the W-2 ever match one's last pay stub. That's why it's not advisable for one to file their taxes using their last paystub.

It is certainly possible.  Especially if a pay-period does not end exactly on the last day of the year. 

If the difference is significant, you should contact your employer to ask for an explanation.
