my 2025 tax returns through turbo tax included none on my SS income, IRS included $50,202. This made my refund $2084.32 instead of $12,346?

turbo tax did not use IRS form 703, which would have calculated the correct amount.

Can you give us some more information to clarify your situation?

  • Did you correctly post the Social Security in your tax return?
  • Is there a spouse involved that also received Social Security?

There is no IRS Form 703. Do you mean Notice 703? The worksheet in Notice 703 can be used to see if your Social Security benefits may be taxable. The worksheet cannot be used to calculate the actual taxable amount, and the worksheet is never included in your tax return.

After you enter your Social Security benefits in TurboTax there is a screen that asks whether you lived in one of the foreign countries listed on the screen. What probably happened is that you mistakenly answered Yes, even though you lived in the United States. Answering Yes to the question about living in certain foreign countries would result in your Social Security benefits being omitted from your tax return.

Was it this?

USER ERROR WITH SOCIAL SECURITY ENTRY

We have seen a lot of people who made a user error with the entry of their SSA1099.   The screen right after you enter the SSA1099 asks you if you lived in certain foreign countries in 2025.   If you skipped past that screen or answered incorrectly, your Social Security was not taxed correctly.   Look at your Form 1040 and see if line 6b was left blank due to that mistake.  The IRS is catching those mistakes and correcting them by reducing your refund or increasing your tax due.   It is really so important to read every screen slowly and carefully from top to bottom as you prepare your tax return to avoid errors.
