My 2024 return was filed as 2025. What should I do

First, you should hope that it is rejected, because it is all wrong.   The current online software is only for 2025 returns, and cannot be used for a 2024 return.   If it is rejected, you can delete the 2024 information you entered and replace the information with 2025 information, and then try to re-file.   You will need to use "zero" as your 2024 AGI when it asks for AGI.

If it somehow gets accepted for processing by the IRS, you will have to wait until it has been fully processed and then amend to remove the 2024 information and replace it with 2025 information.

In order to file a 2024 return correctly now in 2026:

You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2025 only.   Only a 2025 return can be prepared online and only a 2025 return can be e-filed.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and  2024 is permanently closed.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

My 2024 return was filed as 2025. What should I do

Get your 2024 tax return filed.   You can get the 2024 TurboTax desktop software linked here.  You have to use 2024 software to file a 2024 tax return; you can't use TurboTax Online as it is only good for the current tax year - 2025.

You will need to amend your 2025 tax return, but you should wait until the erroneously return you already filed gets processed (unless it gets rejected).   You have three year to amend the return you just filed.  If the return gets rejected, remove your 2024 data and use the 2024 desktop software to file your 2024 tax return.
