If he answered "No" as to whether someone else can claim him as a dependent, that will effectively block your ability to claim him as a dependent. The situation can be remedied via "amend" process by both of you, but it will take a little time to process.
What would happen is he would have to first do an Amended return changing his status to dependent (someone can claim him). He cannot do an amend until the IRS finishes processing his original return, then he would mail in his amended version.
Once the IRS finishes processing his amend, you can send in an amend claiming him, and the IRS should adjust the difference in what you owe or receive for refund.
Amends must be mailed in, and usually take 4 to 6 weeks to process. Also your son may need to pay back some of his refund as the change in status may alter what he was due.
