Must I file taxes for another state if I earned income from a company in a different state?

I am a freelancer who works remotely, and the company I work for is based in California, although I live full-time in Indiana. Do I still need to file California state taxes although I never stepped foot in that state in all of 2021? I work for them as a vendor, with only a 1099-NEC.

Thank you!

Must I file taxes for another state if I earned income from a company in a different state?

No.  According to the California Franchise Board you are not required to file as a nonresident unless you have income described below.

Do I need to file a California Income Tax Return?

As a nonresident, you pay tax on your taxable income from California sources.

Sourced income includes, but is not limited to:

  • Services performed in California
  • Rent from real property located in California
  • The sale or transfer of real California property
  • Income from a California business, trade or profession (registered as a business in California)
