I received income for participation in a covid research group.  All I did was get tested for covid 19 and a couple of times give blood samples.  Turbo Tax keeps wanting me to list this as a business and I'm getting errors because I haven't filled out the blocks for business and is also treating it as income.  I haven't done this as a business.   Do I have to treat this as business income.  Turbo Tax is asking me how I employee information, and a bunch of questions I don't know.  I don't have a business.  Can you help get me?

You do not want to report this as business income. Instead, report it as Other Common Income following these steps:

    1. Open or continue your return
    2. Select the magnifying glass and search for 1099-misc. Select the Jump-to link
    3. Answer Yes to Did you get a 1099-MISC?
      • If you already entered a 1099-MISC, you'll be on the 1099-MISC Summary screen, in which case you'll edit the 1099-MISC
    4. Enter the info from your form into the corresponding boxes
      • If you need to enter boxes 4–6 or 8–17, check My form has other info in boxes 1–17 to expand the form
    5. Enter COVID-19 Research group under Describe the reason for this 1099-MISC
    6. Select I was in a research study and this was the payment under Does one of these uncommon situations apply?
    7. Answer No. to Did you perform a service to earn the money they paid you?

Turbo tax still asks for name of business, address, zip code and accounting method.

Turbo tax asks for reason for 1099 MISC. I state reason, I selected I was in a research study and this was the payment and selected No. to did you perform a service....etc.  Then I'm asked if I have any other 1099 Misc.

When I run a smart check I'm asked to fill in business info.

Is there something I'm missing so this is not counted as a business.

I am having a little bit of trouble re-creating the error. My suggestion is that you entirely delete out the 1099-MISC and any Self-Employment topic that may have been started when you first entered the form and re-enter it the way I outlined above. To do this:

    1. Go to Federal > Wages & Income > Other Common Income and click Revisit next to Form 1099-MISC. Then click the Trashcan next to the 1099-MISC entry.
    2. Go to Federal > Wages & Income > Self-Employment and click Revisit next to Self-employment income and expenses. If you have any entries there, click the trashcan to get rid of them.
    3. Enter the 1099-MISC using the instructions above. That should not trigger any questions about business income.
