Married this year. I lived and worked in NY all of 2017. Wife lived & worked in PA 9 months of 2017. As of 12/31/17 she's is living and working in NY. How should we file?

I believe that we can file jointly for the federal taxes without any issue, however I am unsure how we need to file the state taxes.

Do we need to file the state taxes separately?

Does my wife need to file 2 different state tax returns for both NY and PA and I just do the NY one? What's the best way to go about this?

Thanks!

Yes, you are correct that you can file a Resident NY return, and your wife needs to file a Part-Year Resident return for PA, but you could probably file jointly for NY, since you are both residents now.

You indicate what date she moved to NY in TurboTax.  It would probably be easier to use the desktop version, to able to use Forms mode and to create different scenarios.

If she has W-2s reflecting PA income and tax withheld and NY income and tax withheld, TurboTax will split the income automatically between states.   If not, she may need to to some calculation to allocate income between states.

Here's some info on how to file Jointly for Federal and Separately for States to help you:
