Married filing jointly but living in different states

My spouse (low wage earner) lives in NJ and I am retired (high investment income) living in Florida, can we  file MFJ joint federal return but separate state returns that only report our own incomes to the states in which we live?

I suggest you purchase a Desktop version of TurboTax.

  • You will complete a joint return for the Federal Tax.
  • You would then prepare an additional Federal type for your wife (No Income tax in FL)
  • Enter only the information that applies to her.
  • Then File the state return for NJ.
