Mailing tax return

I mailed in my tax return on april 15th. My status says printed so I'm assuming that means it was never received even though I paid to have it shipped overnight. I need to know what I should do next or why my tax documents were never received

Mailing tax return

The status of your tax return on the TurboTax Tax Home web page will continue to indicate Printed since the software has no way to know when or even if you ever printed and mailed the tax return.

If you did not use some type of tracking service from the US Postal Service then you will not know if the IRS ever received the tax return.

If you have a federal tax refund use the IRS website for the status of the refund - https://www.irs.gov/refunds

The IRS was not processing paper tax returns for several months due to the pandemic.

Mailing tax return

You will only know if your mailed return was received if you used a mailing service like certified mail or UPS that could have tracked it and let you know it made it to the IRS.  TurboTax has no way to know that you put a tax return in an envelope and took it to a mailbox, nor does TT get any information about it when it has been mailed (or e-filed).

MAILED RETURNS

Per the IRS website IRS Operations During COVID-19: Mission-critical functions continueThe IRS is not currently able to process individual paper tax returns. If you already have filed via paper but it has not yet been processed, do not file a second tax return or write to the IRS to inquire about the status of your return or your economic impact payment. Paper returns will be processed  once processing centers are able to reopen.

If you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.

TurboTax will not know anything about your mailed return, and will continue to show “Ready to Mail” on your account.   TurboTax does not get updates on mailed  (or e-filed) returns.

When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site. https://www.irs.gov/refunds

State returns have to be mailed to the state.

Mailing tax return

Unless you mailed it with a return receipt requested, there is no way to know for sure that the IRS received it. However, you should not be concerned at this point. The IRS has not processed any mailed returns for many weeks due to the pandemic. Regional offices were closed and mailed return were stacked up in trailers unopened.

There is no way for the IRS to know whether your return was received or not until they open up all the returns and start processing them. Once they start processing a mailed return, you can track the status of a refund using this tracking web site: https://www.irs.gov/refunds
