Long term disability ins tells me that my income is not taxable because it's been longer than 6 months. How will you know this is not taxable if I put it down as wages?

If it's reported to you on a W-2, it's taxable. You must report as income any amount you receive for your disability through an accident or health insurance plan paid for by your employer. Read this explanation for details:

•If both you and your employer have paid the premiums for the plan, only the amount you receive for your disability that is due to your employer’s payments is reported as income.

•If you pay the entire cost of a health or accident insurance plan, do not include any amounts you receive for your disability as income on your tax return.

•If you pay the premiums of a health or accident insurance plan through a cafeteria plan, and you did not include the amount of the premium as taxable income to you, the premiums are considered paid by your employer, and the disability benefits are fully taxable.

•If the amounts are taxable, you can submit a Form W-4S (.pdf), Request for Federal Income Tax Withholding From Sick Pay, to the insurance company, or make estimated tax payments by filing Form 1040-ES (.pdf), Estimated Tax for Individuals.

Amounts you receive from your employer while you are sick or injured are part of your salary or wages.

  1. •Report the amount you receive on the line "Wages, salaries, ..." on Form 1040 (.pdf), Form 1040A (.pdf), U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, or Form 1040EZ (.pdf), Income Tax Return for Single and Joint Filers With No Dependents.
  2. •You must include in your income sick pay from any of the following:
    1. A welfare fund
    2. A state sickness or disability fund
    3. An association of employers or employees
    4. An insurance company, if your employer paid for the plan

But what if the life insurance company is telling me they're not reporting it because it's been longer than 6 months and is considered the same as Social Security Disability after that?

Then it's not taxable and doesn't need to be reported. Hope this helps.

But they sent it to me on a W-2 form so I'm wondering if it's going to show up as income? Or should I just take their word for it they tell me they're not sending it in?

That's something that would definitely require clarification from the insurance company. Arm yourself by reading the answer again before calling. If you need extra help after the call, let me know. Also, if you and they determine that it's not taxable, have them issue a corrected W-2 to tell the IRS the same thing. Hope this helps.
