Lived in NJ and now live in NC. How do I file my taxes?

Hello, I lived in New Jersey in January and February 2022 and had a part-time job there. I moved to North Carolina in March 2022, but have not had a job in NC. However, I have been receiving social security and a NJ state pension all year. I also sold my 50% share of a townhome in NJ when I moved.

How do I file my taxes?

Thank you!

I suggest the following:

  • You would report your wages as earned in New Jersey.
  • Your social security is not taxable in either state.
  • Your pension may be allocated with 2/12 to NJ and 10/12 to North Carolina.
  • The sale of your portion of the NJ townhome should be allocated solely to NJ.

Here is a resource regarding the sale of your home, you will need to report the sale on your tax return:

The following will help regarding your move:

Enjoy North Carolina, it is a great state!
