Tax Year Prior to 2020: Let's talk to a specialist

I, as well as a few people on turbotax, are trying to complete our State tax returns, but Schedule CA Part II is giving us a lot of issues. It keeps saying we have things to review, but when we go back and check our math everything is correct. Please help so we can get our state tax returns efiled.

To reach TurboTax:

To not leave the TurboTax site, try right-clicking on the following link and selecting Open link in new tab to get to What is the TurboTax phone number?

Otherwise, I have summarized the article here:

For TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax Online if you're not already signed in.
  2. Select Search in the upper-right corner and then Contact us.
  3. Enter your question, select Let's talk.
  4. Select Get the number then follow the instructions to call us
    • Free Edition (without PLUS): When you select Talk to a specialist, you'll be asked to add PLUS benefits first.

For the Mobile App:

(If using TurboTax on your mobile device's browser, use the TurboTax Online instructions instead.)

The TurboTax mobile app uses SmartLookTM technology to connect you with a support specialist. You can also opt for a callback:

  1. Sign in to the mobile app if you're not already signed in.
  2. Select the question mark in the upper-right corner to open the TurboTax Virtual Assistant.
  3. Select Get live help and enter your question.
    • Free Edition (without PLUS): When you select Get live help, you'll be asked to add PLUS benefits first.
  4. If the information provided isn't helpful, select No, I still need live help.
  5. Select Connect me to connect via SmartLookTM and a TurboTax specialist will connect to your screen and guide you.
  6. Select No thanks if you want a callback instead.
    • If you selected No thanks, be sure to also tap OK, sounds good to set up a callback.

For TurboTax CD/Download software:

  1. Go here to go to our Contact us page.
  2. Select your product (CD/Download Mac or CD/Download Windows), your edition (Basic, Deluxe, etc.), ask your question, then select Continue.
  3. Enter your contact info, then select Get the phone number.

The above is the best and most efficient way for you to connect with the right person so that you can get the help you need. If you still require assistance, you can contact us at (800) 446-8848.

My tax return rejected due to inaccurate. AGI. I don't know why. I posted correct number. Program is now requesting my deceased wife's AGI. I need someone to contact me to help resolve.

You can find your 2018 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) by:

  • Looking at line 7 on page 2 of your 2018 Form 1040; or
  • You can request a transcript of your 2018 tax return from the IRS to ensure you have the right number. You can request your transcript online at the following link: Get Transcript

Check these items as well to ensure you have the correct number.  If you:

  • Filed late last year after mid-November or your return was processed after that time—try entering 0.
  • Amended your return last year—make sure you’re using the AGI from your original return, not the amended one. (If you only have a 1040X form, it’s on line 1, column A).
  • Rounded your AGI to the nearest dollar—be sure to round up when it’s 50 cents or more and down when it’s 49 cents or less.
  • Filed with your spouse last year—you and your spouse have the same 2018 AGI. (Don’t split the AGI amount or enter 0 for one of you).

Unfortunately, without the correct number, your only option would be to print and mail in your return.

This article will give you instruction on how to print and mail your return.

I need help regarding depreciation on a rental unit..schedule E

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Let's talk to a specialist

If you want to speak to someone about entering the depreciation for your rental unit, go to the upper right-hand area of your TurboTax Online screen and click on HELP, then CONTACT US, then TALK TO A PERSON. If you want to speak to Live Tax Advice, you can click on that choice in the upper right-hand corner of your TurboTax screen to find out how much that will cost.

Depreciation on a rental should be taken every year. Home depreciation is "allowed or allowable" which means that even if you did not take the depreciation, you will still get dinged on the sale.

"If you used all or part of your home for business or rental after May 6, 1997, you may need to pay back ("recapture") some or all of the depreciation you were entitled to take on your property. "Recapturing" depreciation means you must include it as ordinary income on your tax return."

Depreciation on a rental home is taken over 27.5 years. You begin taking the depreciation the moment you place the property in service as a rental. You stop taking depreciation when you take the property out of service or when you have deducted the entire cost or other basis in the property.

Take care to remove the land from the depreciable basis. Land cannot be depreciated.

You can find out more about rental property here and here.
