Last year I accidently put two different total incomes for state and federal on a W-2. Shouldn't turbo tax catch that?

If you are referring to the wage amounts in box 1 and box 16 on the W-2, no, TurboTax should not catch it. In many states it's quite common for the federal and state amounts to be different for various reasons, such as differences in the pre-tax vs. post-tax treatment of certain payroll deductions. It can also happen if you worked part of the time in a different state. So different amounts for federal and state wages cannot be considered an error.
