Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

Just married this year. We both changed our federal status to married. We both have used turbo tax separately does only one person need to log in this year?

Does one person need to only log into turbo tax for us to both file jointly?

Yes.  You only file one return that lists your combined income and deductions.  Choose the account of the person you want to be named first or on the top line of the tax forms and stick with it.  Both Turbotax and the IRS get confused if you put a different spouse on the top line on different years.  You may want the top person to be the one with the more complicated tax return so the details will transfer.

Or, start a third account that is clean, and type in manually any carryover items from your 2016 forms and wortksheets.  Starting with a clean return is sometimes recommended over transferring.

Note that whichever Turbotax online account you stop using (one, or both if you make a new third account) will eventually be locked and require payment to unlock the account.  (Your account only stays unlocked as long as you use the same account every year.) -- so go into each account and download all your past tax data files and tax return PDFs, and save them on your own computer in case you need them later.
