It says here, I can qualify for an exception if I haven't received my 1098-T before January 31, does that mean I have to wait until the 31st to file?

You should wait until you receive the form and here's why:

  • Schools are not required to send the form until January 31st. You may be able to retrieve an electronic copy from your school sooner. Some don't send the paper version until mid-February.
  • The IRS is not accepting e-filed tax returns until 1/23/17. Feb.15 for tax returns that are claiming Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit.

If you have already submitted the return, you'll have to wait until it's accepted or rejected. It will be in a pending state until 1/23/17
