Why is TurboTax charging me almost $300 when I keep seeing all the advertising says its absolutely free? Just not free to me?

It looks like you may have upgraded to a higher version and that means you have to also pay extra for your State Returns also. To qualify for the free edition, you must:

Made less than $100,000
Don't own a home or rental property
Don't own a business or have 1099-MISC income
Didn't sell investments
Don't have major medical expenses

If you do qualify, you can clear and start over and choose the Free Edition.
