You don't need to get around the "number of days" prompt in TurboTax, you should enter the actual number of nights the child stayed with you (even if it is less than 183) and then look for the follow-up question asking if you have a written agreement or Form 8332 from the custodial parent.
Because the IRS defines the custodial parent strictly by physical residency, entering 183 or more days when you are the noncustodial parent could incorrectly trigger credits you aren't eligible for, like the Earned Income Tax Credit, which often leads to an audit. Instead, by accurately reporting the lower number of days and selecting the option that the custodial parent is releasing the claim to you, TurboTax will correctly apply the Child Tax Credit to your return while generating the necessary Form 8453 to be mailed with the signed Form 8332.
I did as you suggested and entered 6 months. Now Turbo Tax will not allow me to file as Head of Household and also will not allow me to enter child care expenses. Please let me know where to enter those expenses as it is my year to claim my daughter.
Are you the custodial parent? If not, and you have a Form 8332 or agreement with the custodial parent, this allows you to claim the child as a dependent and get the Child Tax Credit, but not the ability to claim Head of Household or Child Care Expenses. Head of Household and Child Care Credit is only available to the custodial parent.
