TurboTax Free program is suitable only for the simplest returns. Everyone can start for free. The program determines, based on your individual tax situation, that an upgrade is required to properly file your return. See the information I'm linking below that may help you understand why you're required to upgrade.
Why do I have to upgrade from Free Edition?
If you'd like to try to downgrade back to the Free Edition, the only way to do that is by using the "Clear and Start Over" feature. The bad thing is, using this feature clears all of your data and has you begin again. But I think you'll still end up at the same place before filing.
