Is there a way to upload my TurboTax data from my desktop version that I used this year to the on-line version in case I decide to use the on-line version next year?

No but next year you can transfer from the 2018 return on your computer into the 2019 Online version.  Be sure to have the file ending in .tax2018 on your computer.  I could tell you how now but just ask again next year when it’s time.
