I wanted to be sure that the maximum number of Federal efiles permitted is still limited to 5.

Yes ... the is the standing IRS limit. Any others you may need to file must be mailed in OR you can use one of the IRS FREE FILE options when they come available later this month OR you can use the TT FREE option.
Be aware that the online TurboTax Free Edition is very limited to only simple returns--so be careful----if your return requires any of the schedules or extra forms then an upgrade to a paid version will be required. https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/
There are still eight various software providers who will participate in the Free File program but they will not be available until sometime in January----so if you want to use one of them---WAIT.
Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free when the program opens in January

Thank you for complete answer!
I hadn't considered using the free return option for simple returns. Great idea!
The free options are good for simple returns like for your kids. Be aware that if you are doing these returns for compensation you cannot use any of the TT programs or the IRS FREE FILE either since you cannot sign the return with any of these options as required by law.
