Is the amt in Box 7 of a 1099-MISC self-employment income when I only received it b/c I started a new job 2 weeks before the company's payroll system was up and running?
I started a new job last year with a new company. However, when I started, my employer said the payroll system would not be up and running for another week and a half to 2 weeks. So, the employer paid me for the week and half's worth of work I did before the payroll system kicked in. I received a W2 for my wages earned since the payroll system kicked in.
I was not and have never been self-employed. This was simply a one-time instance only because my employer was a new company and payroll was not yet set up. It was only for a period of a week and a half to two weeks. I would have had no expenses because technically I was an employee of the company.
I am not sure how to proceed with filing my 1099-MISC because I am prompted to enter it as self-employment income and complete a Schedule C.

Unfortunately since your employer reported those wages in box 7 of the 1099-MISC you will need to report that income under the self-employment section of the program. The IRS receives the same tax information that you do, and will be looking for you to report that 1099-MISC on your return. Turbo Tax will be able to help you fill out the Schedule C and if you do not have expenses to report that is okay, you just leave that section blank.
