Is my child's income taxable? She earned $6433 (W2) at her job, and received $6327 (SSA-1099) because her father is deceased. She is still considered my dependent.

Here are the rules for determining if a dependent must file a return.

If they have:

  • Unearned income over $1,050

  • Earned income over $12,000

  • Gross income more than the larger of $1,050, or earned income up to $11,0650 plus $350

So, yes, given the information you provided she should file a return but she must indicate on her return that someone else will claim her in 2018.  She will provide this information when entering her personal information.

She should file if she had tax withheld so she can get that refunded.
