Is an employee whom is paid salary under the table supposed to get a 1099-MISC? Does this require you to pay self employment taxes even if working for a company?

I am not self employed. Im a carpenter that works for a man whom owns a business. I do work on jobs that he has aqquired under his business name. Why would I have to pay self employment taxes?

Since you are considered an independent contractor and not an employee (you do not get a W-2), you will file the 1099-MISC and will pay your normal federal, state and self-employment taxes on the profit. You can also write off expenses you have for the job i.e mileage, tools, job materials- to do this you should use the self-employed version.
