Is an amount entered in box 2 of a 1098T considered income or not? If so, what typeofincome?

No, an amount in box 2 on Form 1098-T is not an income.  It indicates the amount of school tuition you have paid or being billed in 2016. If you paid the expenses out of pocket, you are entitled to claim an education credit or deduction on your tax return. 

To enter your Form 1098-T information in TurboTax online program, go to:

 

  • After sign into your account and select Pick up where you left off
  •  At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in 1098t and Enter 
  • Select Jump to form 1098T 
  • Follow prompts

No, an amount in box 2 on Form 1098-T is not an income.  It indicates the amount of school tuition you have paid or being billed in 2016. If you paid the expenses out of pocket, you are entitled to claim an education credit or deduction on your tax return.
