IRS Form 2017 8917 has been added by IRS after e-filing. Now TurboTax AGI differs from IRS AGI by the difference of Form 8917.

Will we need to file amended Federal and State Returns for 2017 to have the correct AGI in IRS records or will the IRS address this issue automatically?

If you would like to claim the Tuition and Fees Deduction, then you will need to amend your 2017 tax returns.

This expired law was reinstated on February 9, 2018.  You will need to mail in your amended return, and state if applicable, and include Form 8917, Tuition and Fees Deduction.

When Congress passed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, tax breaks that expired last year are now are available again for 2017.  So taxpayers who filed their 2017 tax return already may need to amend to take advantage of these extended laws.  Click this TurboTax article Government Shutdown Averted and Tax Provisions Providing Tax Relief Passed to see if any apply to you.
