In addition to my own taxes I need to file for a small nonprofit. Does the nonprofit need its own copy of Turbo tax or can I do both returns with my copy of Turbo Tax?

A not for profit corporation is required to file a Form 990 (or 990EZ).  TurboTax does not support Form 990 or 990EZ, but you can download them from the IRS.

  • Tax-exempt organizations with annual gross receipts totaling $200,000+ (or assets totaling $500,000+) should file Form 990
  • Tax-exempt organizations with annual gross receipts under $200,000 and total assets under $500,000 should file Form 990-EZ
  • If your annual gross receipts don't exceed $50,000, you can e-file Form 990-N
  • Private foundations should file Form 990-PF

did you file for a determination letter for tax-exempt status with the IRS? you use form 1023 or 1023-EZ to apply. they should have responded with a letter acknowledging tax-exempt status and the form you must file.  if you did not get  the letter contact the iRS if denied some entity would have income and expenses to deport.
