You have the right to file a joint return in the year of death so use it.  After that you will file as Single or Qualifying Widow (for the next 2 years if you have a qualifying dependent).

If your spouse died in 2016, you should also file jointly with your late spouse. When you enter or review his info, just make sure you check Passed away before filing this return and enter the date of passing.
