Should we file an extension for an Iowa filed dispute?

received a "notice of tax due" from Iowa return.  Steps 7,8 and part of 9 not filled in on Iowa return.  Do we need to file an extension to dispute this owed amount?

If you received a notice on your 2016 state return you have probably already filed your 2016 state tax return.  In this case you do not need to file an extension.  An extension simply gives you extra time to file your original return.  If you have already filed your return, you do not need extra time.  

An extension would not apply to your notice.  You should respond to the notice as soon as you can to dispute the amount owed.
