How to change your account number

If you have not yet filed your return, please follow these steps to change your bank information for direct deposit of your refund:

  • Uncheck the box underneath the account info stating I want my refund deposited into this account. This very important. Make sure that this box is  not checked.
  • Scroll down and click Continue.
  • A page will display that says Let's get your bank account info.
  • Enter your new or updated account info you want your 2016 refund deposited into.

If you have already filed and your tax return has been accepted, you can no longer change the bank account information . If your return has been submitted and rejected then you are able to change the information, just follow the steps above.

If the IRS is unable to deposit your refund into your account, they will mail you a refund check.

If you have already filed your tax return the bank routing and account number cannot be changed.

If you have not filed your tax return then the bank routing and account number can be changed in the File section of the TurboTax program for either a direct deposit of a tax refund or a direct debit for taxes owed.

How to change your account number

@Townpezzy  Did you already e-file?  If you did NOT e-file you can go to the FILE section and change how you want to receive your refund.  If you want direct deposit you need the routing number and your own account number.

You cannot  change banking information while your return is in pending, nor can you change it after the return is accepted.

If you e-filed:

Banking information for direct deposit is wrong

If you entered incorrect banking information for your refund, you can change it if your return is rejected.  If it is accepted, however, it is too late to change it.  The bank will reject the refund and send it back to the IRS.  Then the IRS will issue a paper check and mail it to the address you put on your tax return.  Expect a delay of at least a couple of weeks to receive your refund.

Here is what the IRS says about entering incorrect banking information
