Adult Dependent
When you claim an adult as a dependent, you get a $4050 personal exemption, which lowers the amount of your income that you are taxed on. It is not a refund. Unlike when you have a child as a dependent, there are not any other “refundable credits” like earned income credit that you can get for claiming an adult as your dependent.
If you claim a parent as your dependent--if you itemize then you can claim medical expenses that you paid for the parent.
