If you are self-employed, you are only required to have an EIN (Employer Identification Number) if you pay wages to W-2 employees. Also, if you operate as a Partnership or Corporation, or are filing a fiduciary tax return.  Please see the following link for more examples of who needs and EIN.   https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/do-you-need-an-ein
