If my past employer deducted LA state tax but I never worked or lived in LA, how do I get that back?

My previous employer deducted LA state tax, yet I live and worked in TX.  I understand this should not have happened, but I am in the process of filing a non-resident LA state return.  How/where do I enter the deducted tax if my LA income was 0?

If you received a W-2 with LA state withholding, you will need to enter this information under the federal W-2 section.

To enter this transaction in TurboTax Online or Desktop, please follow these steps:

  1. Once you are in your tax return, click on the “Federal Taxes” tab ("Personal" tab in TurboTax Home & Business)
  2. Next click on “Wages & Income” ("Personal Income" in TurboTax Home & Business)
  3. Next click on “I’ll choose what I work on” (jump to full list or see full list)
  4. Scroll down the screen until to come to the section “Wages and Salaries"
  5. Edit your W-2 inform to include your LA state income tax withholdings. (This will transfer over to your LA state income tax return.)

In order to get the full refund of your LA withholding, you will need to file a nonresident LA return but report zero "0" income from LA. You must mail in this return and include your state W-2 information. You will want to include an explanatory statement with your LA return stating your situation (that your employer withheld LA taxes from your wages in error)
