IRS amended a jointly filed 2013 return and last year my-ex husband (divorced in 2014) both received letters stating we owed 1600.00 from a debt write off. I have been making payments online to the IRS and so has he but there is still a balance. I am filing Head of Household and getting back a Federal refund for 2016. Will they deduct the entire amount owed from 2013 from my refund. My ex and I agreed to each pay 800.00 to pay this off but are still making installments. What should I do so it will not affect my 2016 refund?

Even when you are on a payment plan with the IRS, if you are getting a refund, your refund will be taken by the IRS and put toward the taxes you owed. You do not have to enter anything about this on your tax return; the IRS will do it automatically.
