I worked one month from my previous employer in January 2017 I made about $2000 do I have to wait for that employer to send me a w-2 to file ?

Yes.  The W-2 not only has the correct information about your income, but also about any deductions (like 401k contributions, health plans, etc.)

Your W-2 is sent to the IRS and they will compare it with the entries on your return.  Wait for the W-2!

Yes.  The W-2 not only has the correct information about your income, but also about any deductions (like 401k contributions, health plans, etc.)

Your W-2 is sent to the IRS and they will compare it with the entries on your return.  Wait for the W-2!
